he took the foreign service exam when we were undergrads at cal. he came back the first time, pleased with results on the written but felt he didn't do so well on the orals. the question that seemed to trip him up and left him perplexed was the following. mr. stevens, please compare american government and jazz music. chris told us he didn't quite know how to handle that question. my suggestion involved people blowing loudly on their horns or banging loud' on their drums was not terribly helpful. we decided to ask questions to trip up the applicant. we didn't have the internet to find a quick answer but figured it out. though chris may not have come up with the answer during that exam he certainly lived the message taught by this interesting comparison. both american democracy and jazz music involved ongoing experimentation. they involve unscripted action and improvisation as we figure out the best way to get along. both depend on a group allowing a soloist or representative to step forward and recite his piece while the rest of the group provides

now we did have a chance to talk with cal tran. they just want to remind you to really take it easy. look from the management center in oakland shows you they do monitor the freeways in realtime. they do ask that you be very careful on the roadways and pay attention to the interchangeable message signs. we did talk to a chp officer earlier this morning. he stopped by but had to take off in a quick manner because he needed to respond to an accident and a spinout. that going on around the region this morning. the rain again has let up just a little bit. as steve mentioned it looks pretty good. we will continue to watch this as well as the flash flood watch for the north bay area. i was in talking with the chp officer he mentioned something kind of interesting. he said this wind can really, really wreak havoc on our morning drive. what it does do is help to blow some of that rain off of the roadways and helps to at least prevent a little bit of flooding and puddling along the roadways. so i thought that was really interesting. also yo
